New vehicle registration codes put on hold HYDERABAD: With preparations for the formation of a new state in full swing, everything is coming under the hammer, including registeration codes for new vehicles. The new state means that vehicles in Telangana will have a new registration code.
While the original proposal was for the registration code to begin with 'TG', a reliable source indicates that this has been extended by a few more days.
The Telangana Transport Department has sent a proposal to the Government of India to change the letters to 'TS' which stand for Telangana State.
The source said that earlier a notification was issued by the Ministry of Road Transport stating the code be assigned as 'TG'.
'On request from the Telangana State government, we sent a proposal once again. We are expecting a reply to the proposal in about three days' said the official.
Regarding the district codes, which are also being considered for a change, other officials from the department said that state governments need to take a call on it.
'Not limiting to that, we will continue the operations with existing codes,' said the official.
The transactions related to the department, which were stalled on the night of May 30 because of the bifurcation work, is scheduled to resume from June 2. Separate websites for both the states will be operational from Monday, after the official announcement of the new state.
However, officials expressed anxiety as the delay in deciding the code would lead to additional work.
'We do not understand why such secrecy is being maintained in case of the vehicle registration codes. The earlier we are informed of the code, the faster we can proceed with further steps,' bristled an official.
