 News: Headline News | Six-decades of struggle for self rule Hyderabad: Telangana has come of age with the relentless struggle of its people, who have time and again fought for their rights and come to a stage where they now have a separate State of their own.
1948- Indian Army marched into the territory of Hyderabad ruler ' the Nizam and made him surrender. Hyderabad joined the Indian Union on September 17, 1948.
1950- Telangana State became Hyderabad State
1956- Telangana was merged with AP on November 1. Even after opposition from Telangana leaders the Congress party made Burgula Ramakrishna Rao vote in favour of merger. Andhra Pradesh was formed with 23 districts and Hyderabad as capital.
1956- 'Gentleman Agreement' was signed to safeguard interests of people of Telangana.
1969- Jai Telangana movement for separate State was started as people protested the failure of implementing 'Gentleman's Agreement' and around 360 youth died in police firing.
Congress leader formed Telangana Praja Samithi.
1972- 'Jai Andhra' movement started in Andhra Pradesh
1973- Presidential order issued to implement six-point formula in order to pacify people in both regions.
1985- Employees in Telangana raised their voice against injustice. CM N T Rama Rao brought out GO 610 to repatriate the non-local employees to Andhra. It was found that over 50,000 employees were illegally appointed.
1997- The BJP supported separate statehood for Telangana and passed a resolution 'One vote two states' in the Kakinada meeting of the party.
1999- Congress, which was in opposition, demanded separate state. Then CLP leader YS Rajasekhara Reddy signed a CLP letter wrote to Congress leaders demanding separate State.
2001- The Telangana movement rejuvenated as the Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, who could not get a berth in the N Chandrababu Naidu's cabinet launched a rebellion with a slogan of 'self-rule'. KCR formed Telangana Rashtra Samithi on April 27, 2001.
2004- TRS aligned with Congress and won five Lok Sabha and 26 Assembly seats. The UPA government at the Centre led by Congress includes Telangana in the Common minimum program and in Presidential address.
2008- TDP announced support to Telangana on the Dasara festival.
2009- TRS fought elections forging alliance with TDP but its tally came down to two Lok Sabha, 10 Assembly seats.
YS Rajasekhara Reddy died in a copter crash on September 2, 2009, which led to political uncertainty leading to new lease of life for Telangana movement.
2009- KCR sits on indefinite fast demanding deletion of clause 14(F), which makes Hyderabad a free zone. Union home minister announced that government would form separate state of Telangana.
2009- December 9, the Centre made a formal announcement to initiate formation of Telangana state.
2009- December 23, Centre put on hold the process of formation of Telangana after protests in Seemandhra, resignations of Congress MPs and MLAs.
2010- Centre formed five-member Sri Krishna committee to look into Telangana issue on February 3. The committee gave six options.
2013- UPA coordination committee and Congress Working Committee decided to carve out separate state.
2013- Union Cabinet approved proposal to divide Andhra Pradesh. Group of Ministers was formed to prepare road map for bifurcation in October.
2013- Union Cabinet approved Andhra Pradesh Reorganization bill 2013 and sent to the President Pranab Mukharjee to send it to state Assembly.
2013- Bill was introduced in both houses of state legislature on December 16.
2014- State legislature passed a voice vote resolution rejecting bill and appealing to the President not to send the bill to Parliament on January 30.
2014- Union cabinet cleared the bill and sent it to the President to table it in Parliament on February 7.
2014- Bill introduced in Lok Sabha amid clashes. MP L Rajgopal used pepper spray and speaker suspended 16 Congress MPs for rest of the session on February 13.
2014- LS passed Telangana bill amid black out of LS TV on February 18.
2014- February 20- Telangana bill passed by Rajya Sabha. Celebrations erupt in entire Telangana.
2014- Centre declares June 2 as the Appointed Date for Telangana.
