Loan waiver to top cabinet meeting agenda VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as the first Cabinet meeting of the new Andhra Pradesh is slated to be held in the City of Destiny on June 12, waiver of loans issued to farmers and SHGs is expected to hog the limelight.
All ministers and TDP MLAs as well as the Opposition MLAs of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) are eagerly waiting to see what move chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will make on the issue which has financial implications in the order of `80,000 crore.
Though there are several other priorities, the waiver of farm loans is top on the agenda as the khariff works are about to begin a week's time.
For the first time in history, the state Cabinet meeting is being held at the Executive Council Hall of Andhra University. In fact, the district administration has suggested TNL Sabha Hall of Andhra University for the meeting. The CM Peshi officials also favoured the venue.
However, late in the evening, mnister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, after reviewing the arrangements and facilities, has decided to convene the meeting at the Executive Council Hall of Andhra University.
According to sources in the government, several options are being considered for waiver of farm loans.
Naidu has given unconditional pre-poll assurance that all farm loans will be waived if TDP comes to power. He constituted a committee to frame guidelines on the issue.
'In fact, we are in the dark on the issue. There is a discussion that the loans will be classified into various categories. All loans will be transferred to the government which will issue bonds to the banks.
However, the banks are not in a mood to consider this as their NPA will increase,' said a senior MLA of TDP. However, he said that all SHG loans will be waived and a decision will be taken at the first Cabinet meeting. The sources said there will be six issues on the agenda to discuss at the meeting.
The meeting will begin by observing a two-minute silence for the victims of Beas river tragedy in Himachal Pradesh.
Andhra University had hosted the first summer Assembly sessions of Andhra Pradesh at TLN Sabha Hall in May, 1954 after the formation of the State with Kurnool as Capital.
