Guntur police likely upgraded to Commissionerate VIJAYAWADA: The Guntur Urban police district is likely to be turned into a police commissionerate, headed by a DIG rank police officer. According to official sources, there is a possibility of merger of both Vijayawada and Guntur police commissionerates after the upgrade.
An additional DG rank officer will be appointed as the commissioner and both the DIG rank officers will work as his deputies. However, there is no official confirmation on the decision to upgrade.
Guntur Urban police district, which was formed in 2010, is actually scheduled to be elevated to a commissionerate in 2016 as per earlier plans but following the division of the state and the possibility of the capital city of Andhra Pradesh being set up between Vijayawada and Guntur cities, its elevation is going to happen a little earlier.
'There is a need to upgrade Guntur Urban police district as the commissionerate in the wake of the division of the state. Several adjoining areas will also be merged with the upgraded commissionerate.
And, there are chances of merger of both Guntur and Vijayawada commissionerates,' said a senior police officer in Guntur district.
However, a senior police officer in Vijayawada said that merger of both the cities may not be possible as crime pattern in the two districts is different. 'But they may be run as two commissionerates like Hyderabad and Cyberabad commissionerates,' he added.
Vijayawada Urban police district was formed in May, 1983, and KS Vyas had worked as its first chief. It was converted into a commissionerate later and DIG rank officer has since been heading it.
When contacted, Guntur Urban SP Gopinath Jatti said that he has not received any official information about the elevation.
