Elusive monsoon to arrive AP next week
VISAKHAPATNAM: The southwest monsoon which has been delayed, much to the dismay of people due to a depression in the Arabian Sea, is now reported to be advancing and predicted to reach Andhra Pradesh around the middle of next week as the depression weakened.
The depression in the Arabian Sea which was formed last Tuesday, absorbed the moisture from the central parts of the eastern coast, rendering the much-awaited southwest monsoon suspended at Tamil Nadu.
The lack of moisture in the upper air level resulted in a heatwave across the region, which claimed the lives of around 47 people in the districts of coastal Andhra in the last three-four days.
According to the scientists of Indian Meteorological Department, the depression has weakened Friday into a low pressure and is expected to weaken further in the next 24 hours.
'During the onset of monsoon, any system in the Arabian sea, even a depression or low pressure will adversely affect the climate on the East Coast.
Because of the depression in the Arabian Sea, the central parts of the East Coast suffered a lot. However, the depression has weakened now, bringing great relief to the region.
Once the cool climate sets in across the coast, it would help attract the monsoons,' a senior scientist at the Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam, said.
However, any depression in the Bay of Bengal during the setting time of the southwest monsoon could bring heavy rain, he added.
The IMD scientists have also predicted that the severity of the prevailing heatwave will gradually come down in the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the trough of low pressure prevailing over Chhattisgarh and spread across South Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to develop further in the next week.
'All these developments are dependent on the direction of the sea breeze. As long as anti-cool conditions are not expected in the Bay of Bengal, the southwest monsoon may grow active further and reach the coast of Andhra in the next week,' the scientist added.
