KCR decides to scrap Jalayagnam

Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has decided to scrap the Jalayagnam project and bring in a new Irrigation Policy during the Budget session of the Assembly which would be held sometime during July.

The focus of the new government is to provide water to one lakh acres in every Assembly constituency from this year.

According to sources, the CMO has instructed the state Irrigation department to prepare new action plan for the development of irrigation sector in a holistic manner.

Top officials on the condition of anonymity told The Hans India, that state Advisor (Irrigation) R Vidyasagar Rao has been entrusted with the responsibility to prepare the blue print for the new irrigation policy.

The officials said completion of all pending projects, linkage of rivers and revival of tanks in the villages would be given top priority in the new policy.

The designs of the projects which were under construction would be altered to suit the requirements of irrigation and the estimations of the same projects would also be revised.

The controversial Dummugudem lift irrigation and Sagar tail pond projects would be shelved in the new scheme for irrigation sector in Telangana.

Palamuru, Jurala- Pakala, Bheema and Kalwakurthi and Nettempadu lift irrigation schemes in Mahbunagar district, Sripada Rao lif irrigation scheme in Karimnagar, KoilSagar, Gundlavagu and Madikuntavagu projects in Khammam district, Suddavau, Ralivagu, Komaram Bheem and Gollavagu projects in Adilabad districts would be given top priority to develop irrigation facility. All these are medium and minor irrigation projects.

The major and lift irrigation projects, Alimineti Madhava Reddy lift irrigation project in Nalgonda (to irrigate 3lakh acres),and Chokka Rao project which covers Warangal , Medak, Karimnagar and Medak districts would be taken up as major irrigation projects .

The designs of these ongoing projects would be changed depending on the requirement of water for irrigation in every Assembly constituency in the districts.

The new irrigation policy would also focus on providing drinking water in the fluoride affected areas, particularly in Nalgonda district, by completing the long pending Nakkalagandi and Dindi lift irrigation projects on war footing.

Under the Jalayaganam, the previous governments had taken up 26 major and medium irrigation projects to create irrigation potential of 29 lakh acresin addition to the existing 23 lakh acres. However, the government could not succeed to complete the projects in a time bound manner.

The officials said that the government is contemplating to allot Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 crore for the irrigation sector in the budget 2014 -15 in view of the importance of the irrigation sector in the new state.
