No more pleasure trips for students: Nayani Hyderabad : As part of efforts to prevent recurrence of tragedies like the one that happened in Beas river, claiming the lives of 24 students from Hyderabad, the Telangana government will restrict students' trips to other states, Home Minister Nayani Narsimha Reddy said on Tuesday.
Reddy, who returned from Himachal Pradesh after overseeing the rescue operations, said he would soon submit a report to the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, detailing the reasons that led to the tragedy.
The report will recommend that the government keep a tab on such trips and take action against private college managements, if necessary, he said.
Attributing the incident to sheer negligence on the part of college management for sending students without any senior person to monitor and the dam officials who let off the waters without any warning, he said that the CM will take a decision on imposing restrictions on such trips in future.
'In Tamil Nadu, there is a ban on student tours. Now, we are mulling similar restrictions,' the Home Minister said. In coordination with Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, National Disaster Management Deputy Chairman M Shashidhar Reddy and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Veerabhadra Singh, they had pressed into service the sonar and other latest equipment to trace the bodies, but in vain.
The High Court of Himachal Pradesh took up a Suo Moto case on the tragedy and sought a report from Himachal Pradesh government, the Minister said.
Of the 48 students, 24 were washed away in the gushing waters of Beas river after the dam gates were opened. Eight bodies were retrieved and brought back to Hyderabad. While Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh Governments have announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to each family of the victims, Himachal Pradesh government announced Rs 1.5 lakh ex-gratia.
The minister said that the college management had agreed to return the fee of the students, to give seat to the sisters or brothers of the victims and a job to the needy parents. He said that the government would also consider giving employment to the parents of the deceased students.
