NTR Sujala Sravanti in AP from Oct 2 HYDERABAD: The new AP government will implement NTR Sujala Sravanti scheme, supplying packaged drinking water in 5,200 habitations in the first phase from October 2. Panchayat Raj Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu said that the scheme would be launched first in Anantapur district.
Speaking after a review meeting at the Secretariat, the minister said that as per the norms each person should get 55 litres of water daily for all uses. But, the identified 5,2000 habitations were getting around only 25 per cent of the 55 litres.
Under the NTR Sujala Sravanti, the state government would supply two cans of 12 litres each to every family at a cost of Rs 2. The state government constituted a seven-member expert committee to study and give reports on the project. The officials will also tour Tamil Nadu to study similar programme there.
The government noted that each water purifying plant costs around Rs 6 to 7 lakh. If there was village panchayat building, the cost would come down to Rs 3 lakh. The government would help the local youths to obtain bank loans and sell water to villages at nominal prices.
'If each person sell 600 cans, he will earn Rs 1,200 per day. After meeting expenses each one could earn Rs 25,000 per month,'' the minister said. Local youths, especially women, would get employment and people would get purified water, Ayyanna Patrudu said.
There are 47,190 habitations in Andhra Pradesh, but the scheme would be implemented in 5,200 habitations in the first phase. The remaining habitations would be covered in the later phases, the minister said.
