TRS govt to waive all crop loans HYDERABAD: It is official now. The Telangana government will waive all the crop loans, old and new, of around 32 lakh farmers, subject to a maximum limit of Rs 1 lakh. This will cause a burden of Rs 20,000 crore on the state exchequer, agriculture minister Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy told reporters here.
The minister said that the government would come out with guidelines to this effect soon. However, the crop loan waiver will be limited to Rs one lakh as assured in the TRS manifesto. If a farmer takes Rs 4 lakh crop loan, Rs one lakh would be waived and they had to repay the remaining Rs 3 lakh.
Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will meet the visiting Union agriculture minister Radha Syam on Monday. Rao will seek more funds for agriculture programmes in the state.
'Several projects are being implemented with Central government grants in agriculture and allied sectors. So we need more support from the Centre,' Pocharam said.
The minister said that the government was committed to establish two universities - Horticulture and Veterinary - in Telangana as assured in the TRS manifesto.
He said according to preliminary estimates each university requires 500 hectares and Rs 200 crore for setting up each university. However, the government has not yet decided on the location of the universities.
