Kodela urges Balakrishna to set up cancer hospital in AP HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly speaker Kodela Siva Prasad Rao, who is also the founding chairman of Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACH&RI), has suggested to the present chairman of the hospital, Nandamuri Balakrishna, to set up one such hospital in the newly-formed Andhra Pradesh state.
Speaking at the hospital's 14th Foundation Day celebrations at Banjara Hills here on Sunday, Rao said that the hospital was already serving patients from other countries and urged the staff to make it the top-most cancer hospital in the world.
'Fourteen years ago BIACH&RI was situated amidst hillocks with pebbles all over. We used to park our vehicles 2 km away from the hospital and go on foot to reach it,' recalled Rao, who is a doctor himself.
Balakrishna, the chief guest at the event, said that the hospital was started by his father the late NT Rama Rao. 'Philanthropists and doctors from here and abroad, and the governments of India and Andhra Pradesh lent support to my father in realising his dream,' said the actor-politician.
He said that the hospital was started in a small three-storey building with a hundred beds. 'Now it is spread over four multi-storeyed buildings with 500 beds and is providing quality cancer treatment,' he said.
Regarding the request for establishment of a similar hospital in the new state, he responded positively and said it would be possible with the support of the government of that state. Those who worked at the hospital for ten years were felicitated on the occasion.
