Vizag: Mysterious death of three of family in fire VISAKHAPATNAM: Three persons of a family, including two children, were burnt alive at their house in the city under suspicious circumstances Wednesday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Sultana Begum (40), her daughter Sofia Begum (17) and son Md Shafi (10), all residents of Type-II quarters at DBL Colony in Saligrampuram under the Fourth Town police station limits.
Expressing doubts over the incident, the police took Sultana's husband Md Mohiuddin into custody for questioning. Sources said that Sultana Begum allegedly doused herself and her two children with some inflammable liquid and set herself and her children afire around 10 am, after her husband Mohiuddin, a class-IV employee of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust Workers Pool, left home at around 8.15 am.
Neighbours and passersby who noticed the fire and smoke from the windows of the quarters made a forcible entry and extinguished the fire using water.
However, the bodies were charred beyond recognition. Surprisingly, the police found out that the neighbours did not hear any cries from the victims and the house was locked from outside, raising suspicion over the incident.
The locals told the police that Sultana's family was in a poor financial condition and she had recently sought financial support for Sofia's further studies after intermediate. The police suspect that Sultana took the extreme step after she could not fulfil her daughter's wish.
Visakhapatnam assistant commissioner of police (East) DN Mahesh and Fourth Town police inspector DSRVSN Murthy rushed to the spot and inspected the place. They said that they were awaiting the postmortem reports for further investigation.
