Farmers demands release of water to Krishna delta VIJAYAWADA: Rythanga Samakhya president Yerneni Nagendranath has taken strong exception to the objections raised by the Telangana leaders against the release of water from Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) to Krishna delta.
He has also come down heavily on Telangana chief minister and TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao for opposing the construction of Polavaram project.
Addressing the reporters here, Nagendranath alleged that Telangana chief minister KCR was telling lies about the Polavaram project and unnecessarily provoking the Telanganites.
Indeed, the Telangana government had stored about 3 TMC of water from the NSP in Akkampalli reservoir and other minor irrigation tanks. 'Objections over the release of water to Krishna delta from the Nagarjuna Sagar Project are nonsense as the Krishna delta is in dire need of drinking and irrigation water,' he said.
The farmers' leaders had already warned that water disputes would erupt between the residuary AP and Telangana, if the state was bifurcated. At present, 32 TMC of water is available in Srisailam Project and 42 TMC of water in NSP. Hence, 10 to 15 TMC of water could be released for Krishna delta for paddy nurseries even as paddy cultivation is yet to be taken up in 13 lakh acres, he pointed out.
All the political parties should strive for the construction of Polavaram project. While bandh was being observed in Bhadrachalam division against its, our leaders' reactions were getting limited to mere newspaper statements, he pointed out.
APCC secretary Kolanukonda Sivaji alleged that the maximum support price for paddy was fixed without consulting farmers and demanded a hike in the MSP. Bharatiya Kisan Sangh East AP secretary J Kumara Swamy also spoke.
