TRS, TDP sweep MPP Chairman posts HYDERABAD: TDP and TRS have continued their winning streaks even in the election to the posts of presidents of Mandal Praja Parishads (MPPs) held on Friday in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana respectively.
In Telangana, the ruling TRS won 202 MPPs of the 381 seats for which indirect polls were held on Friday. Congress bagged 112, TDP won 37 and others captured 21. Following allegations of horse-trading, kidnapping and other reasons, polls to 24 MPPs were postponed to Saturday.
The TRS swept the election in its traditional strongholds such as Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Medak districts. The party also bagged majority of seats even in Adilabad and Mahbubnagar districts. Of the 653 MPPs in Andhra Pradesh, the ruling TDP bagged 415 MPPs while the YSRC won 205.
Of the 13 districts in AP, the TDP secured first position in 11 districts barring Nellore and Kadapa which are considered YSRC strongholds. In fact, some of the MPTCs of the YSRC shifted their loyalties to the ruling party, thus making it sweep the polls in all these 11 districts. The YSRC, however, secured first place in Nellore and Kadapa districts.
Interestingly, the Congress failed to win not a single MPP. However, former chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy's Jai Samaikyandhra Party is able to win two MPPs in his native Chittoor district.
Meanwhile, baton-charge, allegations of horse-trading and kidnapping of rival party's candidates became the order of the day in these polls. Sporadic incidents of violence was also reported from several districts from both the states.
An argument between the workers of TDP and the TRS during Jangaon MPP polls led to batoncharge by the police. In Lingala Ganapuram Mandal in Warangal district, scuffle broke out among the workers of TRS, Congress and the TDP, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge. In the melee, a sub-inspector was injured.
Same situation was witnessed at Narketpally in Nalgonda district when TRS and Congress workers hurled stones at each other. Police resorted to canecharge to control the mob.
In Kathalapur in Karimnagar district, police resorted to lathicharge to disburse the agitating TRS workers. Two constables were hurt in the incident.
In Renjal mandal of Nizambad district, a heated argument erupted between the Congress and BJP cadres when the latter tried to obstruct the Congress MPTCs from entering the mandal headquarters. Later, the situation became tense with both sides turning violent and began pelting stones at each other.
Sporadic incidents of violence were reported in several districts across AP which forced the State Election Commission to postpone the polls in some places.
Election to Muppalla MPP in Guntur district was postponed to Saturday because of the brouhaha between the TDP and YSRC workers.
Police had to canecharge the mob when both the groups attacked each other. Similarly, election to Deverapalli MPP in West Godavari district was also deferred as TD and YSRC cadres fought pitched battles disrupting the election process.
Polls in Jammalamadugu disrupted
For the second consecutive day on Friday, election to the municipal chairperson of Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district was disrupted as TDP and YSRC workers fought pitched battles.
TDP activists allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy of the YSRC. The incident happened even as the election authorities were making preparations to hold election to the municipal chairperson's post.
The YSRC MP also suffered minor injuries. The incident led to tension in the town. The police had to repeatedly lathicharge and lob tear gas shells to disperse the crowds.
