'Bangaru Thalli' to be replaced with 'Mahalakshmi' HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to do away with 'Bangaru Thalli', a scheme launched by Kiran Kumar Reddy government, for the welfare of the girl child belonging to poor families.
In an informal interaction with the media persons at secretariat here on Wednesday, Women Empowerment Minister Peethala Sujatha said that as the 'Bangaru Thalli' scheme was not affective the state government has decided to replace it with a new scheme 'Mahalakshmi' which would be a comprehensive scheme.
Replying to a question, the minister said that the existing members of the 'Bangaru Thalli' scheme would be accommodated in the new scheme.
Since Bangaru Thalli scheme was brought through an Act, it has to be amended. The government is expected to amend the Act in the ensuing budget session scheduled for next month.
As per the 'Bangaru Thalli' scheme, the state will give Rs 1,000 per month to the woman from the time she conceives till the time of her child's birth. And if a girl child is born, the mother would be given Rs 2,500 at the time of delivery.
From then on till the girl attains the age of five, Rs 1,500 would be given each year to the family towards the girl's expenses. At the time of admission to school, the family would be paid Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 every year for her studies from Class I to V.
She will be paid Rs 2,500 each for the VI to the VIII standard and Rs 3,000 each for Class IX and X. For Intermediate, the girl will be paid Rs 3,500 per year and Rs 4,000 for each of the three years of graduation.
In case the girl stops her education after Intermediate, she will be paid Rs 50,000 towards the marriage expenses and Rs one lakh if she opts for marriage after graduation. In effect, the state would be spending about Rs 2.1 lakh towards the total education and marriage expenses of a girl.
The scheme will be applicable to two girl children of each family of white ration card holders. The benefits under this scheme will be provided irrespective of them being beneficiaries of the other schemes being implemented for the welfare of the girl child in the state.
