VIMS super specialty hospital to come up in Vizag
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government is in the process of preparing a 'Medical Vision Document(MVD)' to provide high quality medical services and facilities to people of both the regions of the state.
Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) to set up a high-powered committee of specialists to prepare a MVD for the state. The committee has been told to come out with the document by November.
The state government has divided the state into three zones -- North coastal Andhra zone with Visakhapatnam as its centre, Krishna zone with Vijayawada as its centre and Rayalaseema zone with Tirupati as its centre -- to provide quality medical services to the people.
As part of the initiative Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) will be developed into a 250-bed super speciality hospital.
'Our aim is to set up 750-bed super speciality facility in the region and in the first phase 250-bed facility will be created. The chief minister has already sanctioned Rs 60 cr for this purpose,'' principal secretary of medical and health LV Subramanyam said.
VIMS, meant for the people of north coastal Andhra districts and also those of the neighbouring states, would be developed into a high-end oncology and traumatology centre, he said and added that the King George Hospital in Vizag would also be upgraded.
The erstwhile AP government had entered into an MoU with the Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital to set up its centre in Visakhapatnam and the government would further pursue the issue with that hospital, Subramanyam said.
To cater to the medical needs of the people of Krishna district, an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) would be set up in Vijayawada. 'As per the AP Reorganisation Act, the Centre will set up a 500-bed AIIMS in Vijayawada at a cost of Rs 1,200 cr to Rs 1,500 cr. Apart from this, the hospital will get 150 medical and 30 to 40 BSc nursing seats,'' he pointed out.
The Centre had asked the state to allocate 200 acres of land for the proposed AIIMS but presently it had 160 acres of land and would try to procure the remaining land from the area allotted to the APSP battalion, he said. SVIMS in Tirupati would be upgraded to a super speciality hospital.
