OU students protest: KT Rama Rao cancels visit HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at the Andhra Mahila Sabha College on the Osmania University campus here when police took into custody members of the Telangana Joint Action Committee for the Unemployed who tried to disrupt a book centre function which minister for IT and panchayat raj KT Rama Rao was to attend as the chief guest.
The minister, however, did not turn up and the reasons for cancellation of his visit were not known. Meanwhile, the OU students lodged a complaint with the Charminar police against minister for irrigation T Harish Rao for abusing students who gheraoed him on Sunday.
The police, however, said that they were busy with Bonalu bandobust and would look into the issue. Around 11.30 am on Monday, students, on receiving information that Rama Rao was attending the inaugural of a book promotion centre-cum-book shop at Andhra Mahila Sabha College for Women, thronged the place.
When Rama Rao did not turn up, the students shouted slogans against Harish Rao and education minister G Jagadish Reddy on the account alleged mistreatment by the irrigation minister on Sunday when they tried requesting him to reconsider government's decision on regularisation of contract employees.
'We were abused and bad-mouthed. This is not the way a minister should behave,' said Kalyan, a member of the Telangana Joint Action Committee for the Unemployed.
'We have sacrificed our valuable time participating in the Telangana movement and missed employment notifications in the previous years,' said Venkatesh Goud, a member of the committee.
'We have been waiting for the government to issue notifications this year so that we can apply for jobs. But they have regularised services of contract employees for gazetted posts as well, which is unfair,' Goud said.
