New registration for old vehicles may take time
HYDERABAD: The web-based system to issue new vehicle registration numbers for old vehicles in the new Telangana state is not yet ready. Transport officials say that it is only at the proposal stage and guidelines and modalities regarding the system will be worked out after the government notifies it.
The idea is to help vehicle owners to get their new registration numbers by entering the chassis number of their vehicle and their date of birth in the proposed portal. After filling in the required details, a certificate stating their new number will appear on the screen which can be downloaded and printed.
Only the state code (TS) and district codes will be changed in the registration numbers. For Hyderabad and Adilabad districts, there will be no change in the district codes either.
After getting the certificate stating their new vehicle number, it is up to the vehicle owners to opt for a Smart Card, said an official of the department.
The official said that to verify whether the request for a new number is genuine, some details will be asked for. 'Even a thief knows a vehicle's number. To put a check to such cases, the last five digits of the chassis number and the date of birth of vehicle owner will be asked for before issuing the certificate,' said the official.
Owners should carry the certificate along with their old RC and if they opt for a smart card, the certificate will not be needed. 'Carrying the certificate and old RC is second level of putting check on vehicle thieves,' said the official.
Another official said that it was too early to state anything about who would be paying for the smart card. Whether the owners will have to get a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP), after change of number, is another aspect that will be thought about.
The officials stated that their objective is to introduce a hassle- free system for people in getting new registration numbers.
