I-Day fete at Golconda despite army opposition HYDERABAD: Despite minor hiccups in the form of opposition from Army, the Telangana state government is going ahead with arrangements for Independence Day celebrations at the historic Golconda Fort. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at a review meeting with officials on Wednesday afternoon decided that flag hoisting should be done in the meadows in front of the Rani Mahal in Golconda Fort.
The Chief Minister is keen that the celebrations should be memorable since it is the first I-Day after formation of Telangana state. He directed the officials to ensure that there would be cultural programmes at the Rani Mahal at least two hours before the actual unfurling of the Tricolour, thus setting the stage for the historic event.
After the policemen did a rehearsal at the Golconda Fort in the morning, there was opposition to the use of the ground outside the fort from the Army. They claimed that the land belongs to them and would not allow any activity by others on it.
According to official sources, the revenue department too has documents to the effect that the land in question belongs to the government. 'This means that a joint survey has to be done to find out as to whom the land actually belongs,' an official said.
As the Golconda fort is under the control of Archeological Survey of India (ASI), the Telangana government has already written to it for permission.
Now that the Army is claiming that the land belongs to them, the government will have to seek permission from the Centre. 'If necessary we will write to the Centre,' the officer said.
