KCR announces sports city near Hyderabad HYDERABAD: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was a figure of pride following the excellent showing of Hyderabadi sportspersons in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
He assured that the Telangana government will develop an excellent sports city around Hyderabad shortly. Victorious participants of the Commonwealth Games including shuttlers Parupalli Kashyap, PV Sindhu, Jwala Gutta, Gurusai dutt and Saina Nehwal along with coach Pullela Gopichand, shooter Gagan Narang and Gymnast Aruna Reddy, called on the Chief Minister at Secretariat on Wednesday.
Chandrashekar Rao announced an award of Rs 50 lakh for Gold medallists, Rs 25 lakh for Silver and Rs 15 lakh for Bronze medal winners. Each participant will receive Rs 3 lakh. He also announced an award of Rs 50 lakh each to coaches Pullela Gopichand and Arifuddin.
While showering praise on the athletes, KCR said he wishes for the design and development of the sports city to be done using local Telangana talent. He also said that the proposed sports city would be in a position to conduct inter-state, national and international level sports competitions every two months. The sports city would also be used for training programmes for the athletes.
The Chief Minister also agreed to allot the existing stadiums to talented sports persons to develop academies.
Explaining that there would soon be a detailed meeting to discuss about the proposed sports city and on sports policy, he said that Hyderabad must set an example as a hub to develop talent.
KCR urged the central government to exempt Income Tax on these awards and announced that the players will be felicitated and receive the awards on August 15th, during Independence day celebrations.
The Chief Minister requested all the sports persons who met him to participate in the government promotional activities including the Comprehensive Household Survey across the State on August 19. IT Minister KT Rama Rao, Sports Secretary Luv Agarwal and others were present.
