Army gives in, offers support for ID fete at Golconda HYDERABAD: Finally, the Telangana government will have its way and celebrate Independence Day at the historic Golconda Fort as planned. The Army, which initially raised objections over using 'their' land near the fort, on Thursday agreed to cooperate with the government to hold the celebrations.
Army officials, in a meeting with the officials, informed them that the open place in front of the historic site will be allowed to be used as a parking lot. Army officials also promised to make the environs in front of the fort clean. On the other hand, the state government will make arrangements inside the fort for the celebrations.
It may be recalled that the Army had objected to the government's plan to celebrate Independence Day at the fort stating that 40 acres of land in front of it belonged to them and the government would not be permitted to use it.
Meanwhile, chief secretary Rajiv Sharma reviewed the arrangements along with higher officials at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The celebrations at the fort will be in accordance with a comprehensive plan chalked out in after elaborate discussions with higher officials from the home, revenue, R&B, GHMC, transport, I&PR, culture departments and also the Army.
As the location is a new one, officials have been asked to set up clear-cut barricades and visible signages on the approach roads to facilitate easy approach of the public. An elaborate seating arrangement, setting up of makeshift toilets and providing other facilities were also discussed at length.
Keeping in view the heritage importance of the surrounding area, the officials stressed on the need to make the celebrations litter-free.
It was also decided to arrange mini-buses to transport children and elderly people from the parking area. Besides, LED screen will be installed near the gallery.
