Tiger drowns in Nagarjuna Sagar canal
ONGOLE: The body of a dead tiger was spotted by local people in the Nagarjuna Sagar Project Right Canal near Chimakurthy in Prakasam district Sunday morning.
The dead tiger, which might have strayed from Nallamala forest close by, was stuck to the trees in the canal at Viva quarry near Chimakurthy.
Police retreived the body of the dead tiger after receiving the information from local people. 'When the locals informed us, we came and retrieved the tiger's body from the canal and surrendered it to Ongole forest officials,' said Chimakurthy SI Y Nagaraju.
In the post mortem report it was found that the animal had died of lack of air in the lungs after it fell into the water.The three-year-old tiger weighed 70 kilograms and was three feet tall.
'The tiger might have died while attacking a herbivorous animal and fell into the canal. Though tigers can swim, as the canal at the point was deep and narrow, it died as it was unable to breathe.
After the death, the body floated and got stuck in the trees near Cheemakurthy. The death was accidental and not the work of poachers as both the nails and the skin of the tiger are intact,' Gnyana Prakasha Rao, Ongole forest range officer said. Nallamala forest houses Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve which has the largest tiger reserve in India.
