New Year fills Telangana coffers, brings cheers to govt HYDERABAD: Thanks to New Year revelry, December continued to be the most favourite month for the State excise department. Guzzlers had a (wh)ale of time by gulping down Rs.50 crore worth liquor in the last two days -- December 30 and 31 -- of 2014. Little wonder, coffers of the department are brimming.
Over 23 lakh cases of beer and more than 18 lakh cases of liquor had been sold across Telangana in last one month. More than 20 per cent of the total products were sold in the last one week alone. The government made a cool Rs.50 crore from liquor supply in the last two days of December, an excise official said.
Apart from New Year celebrations, wedding parties and commercial events helped the government register a sharp rise in the sales and earn impressive revenues. 'Most of our revenues happen in December. New Year parties continue to be major contributors, but they are not the only source,' said an official.
Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts topped the charts as the highest consumers of liquor in Telangana. Hyderabad district registered sales of over two lakh cases of beer and liquor while Ranga Reddy district was much ahead with sale of over four lakh cases of beer and liquor in December.
Around 190 retail liquor shops and more than 60 pubs operate in the capital city. According to manufacturers, six breweries in Telangana produce around 42 lakh cases of beer while one in AP produces eight lakh cases every month.
