R&B to hand over 190-km roads to GHMC HYDERABAD: With instructions from chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to hand over all the road stretches belonging to the roads and buildings (R&B) department to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) falling within the GHMC limits for maintenance, decks have been cleared for handing over R&B roads to GHMC.
For the last 10 days, a series of meetings have been held between senior officials of R&B and GHMC and the former agreed to hand over the roads to the corporation. A formal order to this effect would be issued shortly.
In GHMC limits R&B maintains 190 km of roads. For several years the GHMC has been requesting the state government to transfer those roads to it for proper maintenance.
Any damage to the roads has to be taken care by the respective departments but this was not happening in case of Hyderabad, GHMC is taking temporary filling up of potholes repairing damaged patches and making them motorable so that people are not put any inconvenience.
There was lack of coordination with R&B on maintenance of roads. Whenever roads are damaged in the twin cities, they need immediate repairs but has become problematic for GHMC in recarpeting them because many of the major roads in the city either belongs to R&B or National Highways Authority of India.
GHMC officials told they are waiting for government orders for transfer of R&B roads to GHMC. 'Once we take over the above stretches, corporation will maintain them in good conditions and avoid inconvenience to the motorists,' an officer said.
