Left parties oppose Visakha Utsav VISAKHAPATNAM: Left parties have strongly objected to organising the Visakha Utsav, especially in the aftermath of cyclone Hudhud, and also demanded the government to immediately pay compensation to the cyclone-affected. They are also planning to meet the Parliamentary Committee (Home Affairs) soon to lodge a complaint against the state government in this regard.
A round-table meeting was held at the CPM office in the city in which leaders from CPI, CPM, CPI (ML) New Democracy, CPI (U), CPI (ML) Liberation and NUCI (C) discussed post-Hudhud conditions in the district.
Even as 1.48 lakh houses were damaged in the district, either completely or partially, due to the cyclone, the government was misleading the people with its false claims that compensation was already paid to 50 per cent of victims. According to ground-level reports, over 65 per cent of the cyclone-affected were yet to get the relief amount, they alleged.
The Left parties also crticised the government for not including the tenant farmers in the cyclone victims' list. Though the cyclone ravaged crops in an extent of 36,000 hectares in the district, the ryots did not get a single pie so far even after three months. It did not even include the heavy damaged areas in the route map of the Parliamentary Committee, which was decided by the district administration, they pointed out.
It was unfortunate that the government wants to spend huge amounts on conducting community lunches and Visakha Utsav, instead of helping out Hudhud victims, the leftists said and sent a note to the government in this regard.
