Survey for Vizag Metro Rail kicks off
VISAKHAPATNAM: Denizens who returned to work after the week-long Sankranti celebrations were gladdened as the traffic survey for the much-awaited Vizag Metro Rail Project kicked off.
Also, another survey by NK Engineers to prepare a topographic inventory is already underway. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the metro rail project after receiving the two survey reports, expected to be submitted by the end of the financial year.
As indicated by E Sreedharan, advisor to Andhra Pradesh government on Metro Rail projects, the surveys are being taken up in three corridors simultaneously, covering core areas of Visakhapatnam from Madhurawada to NAD junction, Thatichetlapalem to Old Post Office and Gurudwara junction to the Park Hotel junction. The three corridors run an estimated stretch of 34 km.
According to GVMC commissioner Pravin Kumar, Hyderabad-based Aarvee Associates will carry out household surveys and traffic surveys in the GVMC area. He urged the residents of Visakhapatnam and also officers of the departments concerned, to cooperate with the enumerators of Aarvee Associates in completing the survey expeditiously.
The surveyors will gather information pertaining to the present traffic by various modes, on the identified routes apart from identifying the areas which require property acquisition for road expansion.
'The surveyors would also find out if the property owners are willing to hand over their properties in case of acquisition for a good compensation,' said a senior official of GVMC.
As part of the pre-construction information gathering, the agency NK Engineers has already begun the topographic survey, preparing data regarding the width of the roads, number of buildings and readying an inventory on the stretch. The officials said that a geotechnical survey to study soil conditions will be taken up soon.
All three surveys are expected to be completed before the end of March. On completion of the surveys, the design teams of DMRC will prepare the detailed project report, which will be ready by June.
As per initial estimates, an investment of around Rs 200 to Rs 220 crore per km is required for realising the metro rail project and the 34-km project is expected to cost around Rs 6,500 to Rs 7,500 crore.
