AP govt set to hike power tariff HYDERABAD: Much to the relief of people belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, the Andhra Pradesh Discoms did not propose any tariff hike for those who consume less than 100 units of electricity per month. The hike for other consumers is also a record nominal.
The Discoms proposed Rs 1,261 crore burden on power consumers with the average increase in unit price at 25 paise. In all, the Discoms proposed 5.6 per cent hike, a major relief to the power consumers.
The State Cabinet during its recent meeting rejected the proposal of Discoms to increase the power tariff by at least 10 per cent. Accordingly, the Discoms proposed only six per cent hike in power tariff for the year 2015-16.
In fact, the Discoms did not increase the power tariff in 2014-15, as bifurcation of the combined State was in the process then. So, there were no major power shocks for consumers in 2014-15.
The Discoms submitted the new tariff proposals to the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC). The Discoms are facing a revenue deficit of Rs 7,716 crore. The remaining deficit after the tariff hike, which is expected to be of the order of Rs 6,455 crore will be borne by the State government.
