Microsoft Quantum Computing in Amaravati

By G Janardhana Rao, Business Editor

Visakhapatnam: Yet another good news for Andhra Pradesh. Even as the state is bracing up to host CII partnership summit to attract investment, IT global giant Microsoft has announced plans to invest Rs. 1,772 crore to establish India's largest quantum computing facility in Amaravati.

This landmark project positions Amaravati as a global hub for advanced quantum research and innovation, marking a major leap for India's tech ecosystem. The Quantum Valley project is designed to foster deep tech research and innovation, with other partners like IBM and Fujitsu also involved. The presence of Microsoft will boost the ecosystem and more players are expected soon.

Vice President of IT Park Association Rushikonda, O Naresh Kumar welcomed Microsoft plans to invest in Amaravati. This is a big boost to the quantum Valley, he said.

Earlier IBM, TCS and L&T announced their plans for the Quantum Valley and now it is Microsoft, he said. Hyderabad was transformed after ISB and Microsoft have set foot there, Naresh Kumar said.

CEO of Pelican Valley Integrated Tech Park, promoted by a group of NRIs near Sullurpet in Tirupati District, Prasad Natarajan said big projects such as Microsoft and Google will certainly attract more companies to set up in Andhra Pradesh. It is a big opportunity even for accessory companies as they will be benefited with the ecosystem created, he said. Besides more jobs will be created, the Pelican Valley CEO said that these developments will add a lot of value to the knowledge economy.

Sankhya Technologies CEO Bulusu Murali Manohar said talent is most important to tech companies and they get attracted to wherever there is talent. Many companies are looking towards Andhra Pradesh due to availability of large talent pool in the State. It is advantageous for both companies and the state. With the presence of Microsoft and Google the entire world will be looking towards Andhra Pradesh, he said. It is necessary to further develop the existing infrastructure to meet future needs, he said.

Naresh Kumar said Microsoft is significantly expanding its presence in Andhra Pradesh, with major plans for a quantum computing research center in Amaravati and a partnership to train two lakh youth in AI and advanced technology skills. The company is also investing in land near Amaravati to support these initiatives. Microsoft also acquired 25 acres of land near Nandigama in September 2024 to support its activities in the state.

Microsoft's program includes training for 500 teachers and 10,000 engineering students from rural colleges. Additional training is planned for 50,000 individuals to improve public services and 30,000 more through rural ITI colleges.
