Vizag port poised to reach 100 MMT target next fiscal year, says VPA chairman

By G Janardhana Rao, Business Editor

Visakhapatnam: Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), M. Angamuthu, announced on Monday that the port has been making substantial investments to enhance its infrastructure in line with the Prime Minister's vision of 'Viksit Bharat.'

Speaking after unfurling the National flag during the 77th Republic Day celebrations at port stadium, the VPA chairman highlighted Visakhapatnam Port's pioneering role in the maritime sector. He emphasised the port's initiatives, including Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, Operations & Maintenance (O&M) models, and the adoption of renewable green energy.

The VPA is currently in the process of relocating some of its cargo operations to Mulapeta Port in Srikakulam. Additionally, it is a key partner in the shipbuilding initiative at Dugarajapatnam.

Angamuthu also shared performance milestones. He noted that the VPA has handled over 82 million tonnes of cargo and is expecting to achieve 90 million tonnes in the current fiscal year. With the full support of PPP operators, BOT partners, and the dedicated workforce of the VPA, the port is poised to reach 100 million tonnes in the next year.

Looking ahead, the VPA has ongoing projects worth over ₹1500 crore in the pipeline for 2025-26. These projects aim to improve port systems and contribute to the development of Visakhapatnam City, neighbouring states, and the nation. Notably, the VPA boasts the largest internal rail connectivity in the country, complemented by robust road connectivity, ensuring hassle-free cargo movement.

The chairman emphasised the importance of all officers and employees giving their best, setting national benchmarks, and upholding the high standards of VPA.

Earlier, the chairman inspected the guard of honour accorded by the CISF VPA unit. To add to the celebrations, patriotic cultural programmes were organised. The CISF showcased various security demonstrations, including gun firing and sniffer dog displays. A special attraction was the CISF Arms and Ammunition Exhibition for public awareness, followed by a departmental tableau parade. Angamuthu presented citations and awards to employees for outstanding performance and to stakeholders for their remarkable achievements.

He expressed gratitude to the Commandant of CISF, Deputy Chairperson, Chief Vigilance Officer, Heads of Departments, staff, and all those involved in organising the event in a befitting manner. He also extended his special appreciation to stakeholders and trade partners for their unwavering support to the port.
