High speed rail corridors in Telugu states

Visakhapatnam: The Central Government has announced high-speed rail corridors in Telugu states, connecting Hyderabad to Chennai and Bengaluru via Andhra Pradesh. These corridors will enhance transportation and boost the economy in Telugu states.
The proposed corridors are part of the Union Budget 2026-27, which aims to promote environmentally sustainable passenger systems.

The Hyderabad-Chennai high-speed rail corridor will span approximately 744.57 km, passing through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The route will include stations in Amaravati, Guntur, Chirala, Ongole, Kavali, Nellore, and Chennai.

The Hyderabad-Bengaluru corridor will cover around 576.6 km, running almost parallel to the Hyderabad-Bengaluru Highway. Both corridors will share a 38.5 km stretch from Hyderabad to Shamshabad before diverging towards their destinations.

These high-speed rail projects are expected to revolutionize travel in Telugu states, boosting economic growth and transforming connectivity between Hyderabad, Amaravati, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2026-27 proposed seven High-Speed Rail corridors across the country
to promote environmentally sustainable passenger systems. The proposed corridors between cities will be developed as 'growth connectors', namely i) Mumbai-Pune, ii) Pune-Hyderabad, iii) Hyderabad-Bengaluru, iv) Hyderabad-Chennai, v) Chennai-Bengaluru, vi) Delhi-Varanasi, vii) Varanasi-Siliguri.
Also to promote environmentally sustainable movement of cargo, the Finance Minister proposed new Dedicated Freight Corridors connecting Dankuni in the East, to Surat in the West; operationalise 20 new National Waterways (NW) over next 5 years, starting with NW-5 in Odisha to connect mineral rich areas of Talcher and Angul and industrial centres like Kalinga Nagar to the Ports of Paradeep and Dhamra. Training Institutes will be set up as Regional Centres of Excellence for development of the required manpower.
The Budget aims to further amplify the potential of cities to deliver the economic power of agglomerations by mapping city economic regions (CER), based on their specific growth drivers. An allocation of ₹ 5000 crore per CER over 5 years is proposed for implementing their plans through a challenge mode with a reform-cum-results based financing mechanism.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu said the High-Speed Rail Corridors are going to bring a big boom to Andhra Pradesh.
The Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai High-Speed Rail Corridors will be a milestone in the state's development journey. These corridors will cover important areas like Tirupati and Amaravati, boosting tourism and economic growth, he said.
The Bengaluru-Chennai High-Speed Rail Corridor will benefit areas like Palamaneru and Chittoor. These three High-Speed Rail Corridors will connect various parts of AP, improving connectivity between key cities like Hyderabad, Amaravati, Bengaluru, and Chennai. He says this will significantly contribute to the state's economic growth and improve the standard of living for its people.
