Tutor, warden held for raping tribal girls
Nalgonda: The two accused in the alleged rape of 12 girl students in a tribal residential school in Enamedi Thanda of Nalgonda district were arrested on Saturday.
The day also saw the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) take suo-motu cognisance of the barbaric incident and directed the Nalgonda SP, DEO and Social Welfare Commission to inquire into the incident and submit a report by January 21 against the sexual exploitation of innocent girls.
Superintendent of Police Prabhakar Rao said here that Ramavath Harish Naik, who was employed as a tutor, and the warden Srinivas, were arrested. The duo will be produced in a Miryalaguda court.
Rao said Naik, who used to rest in the school after dinner, had offered toffees to the victims and indulged in gullible talk, before resorting to sexual abuse. Naik has been booked the Nirbhaya Act (354 A, 376 C, F) and Sections 417 and 420 of the IPC.
Meanwhile, chairperson of the AP Women's Commission chairperson Tripurana Venkataratnam, who visited the school, said that each of the victims' families would be given a house, cash relief of Rs 50,000, and a loan of Rs 1 lakh.
Students from various colleges across Nalgonda observed a bandh on Saturday to vent their ire. Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy expressed shock and anguish over the heinous act. He directed the Nalgonda District Collector to conduct investigation and submit a detailed report immediately. He told the officials to take stern action against the accused.
Meanwhile, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president, N Chandrababu Naidu, while condemning the barbaric act demanded stringent punishment, one that would be a deterrent to all others. He stressed on the need to expedite trials in such incidents under Nirbhaya Act, 2013.
