Anuhya gang-raped before burnt alive HYDERABAD: Mumbai police investigating the death of 23-year-old techie from Andhra found evidence that she was gang-raped and the culprits then planned to sell her into a brothel.
The state railway police, who got inputs from their Mumbai counterparts, said they have reason to believe that when the girl, a TCS employee, fell unconscious after the sexual assault, they thought she had died and took her to a desolate area in Kanjurmarg and set her on fire, though she was still alive. Her body was found half-burnt by the police last Thursday.
The railway police said the girl, after arrival at Loka Manya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in the early hours of January 5 by Visakhapatnam-LTT Express, hired a cab to reach her hostel in Andheri. The cab driver, after going for some distance, picked up a few more drivers, who assaulted her sexually in the car even as the car was moving.
Police have evidence that she either received or made a call when the car was somewhere near Kamatipura, a red light area in the city. Based on the input, the police detained three brothel organisers and are questioning them. The police have also detained a few cab drivers. They questioned two of the girl's friends and then later let them off.
The techie went to her hometown Machilipatnam to celebrate Christmas with her family members. After Christmas and New year, she boarded the train at Vijayawada on January 4 morning for Mumbai to join duty.
Her father spoke to her for the last time when she reached Solapur at about 10.30 pm. After that he could not contact her despite his repeated attempts.
The case which was registered originally with Vijayawada railway police was transferred to Andheri and from there to Kurla police station.
Meanwhile, her body was flown from Mumabi to Hyderabad last night and sent to Machilipatnam, where the funeral was held. Director General of Police (DGP) B Prasada Rao, who was touring Mulugu in Warangal district, said he was in touch with Mumbai police and had requested them to speed up investigation.
