Dowry complaint against High Court judge HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh High Court judge B Chandra Kumar's daughter-in-law lodged a dowry harassm'ent complaint with the Chennai police against him and his family members.
Accompanied by her lawyers, Kavya Rao, currently residing with her parents and daughter at Nandanam, submitted the complaint at the Chennai City Police Commissioner's office and later narrated the details of the complaint to media representatives.
Kavya alleged that her father, a Chennai-based businessman, had paid over Rs 43.50 lakh as dowry to her in-laws, and that her relationship with them had soured after dem'ands for a further `50 lakh.
Kavya was married to Justice Kumar's son B Ramakrishnan in 2007 and the couple had been living in Bangalore where Ramakrishnan was working. 'My husband lost his job in 2008 after which we moved to Hyderabad and lived with my in-laws.
During this period, I was subjected to continuous harassment. I was even denied food and was left to starve. They were persistently forcing me to get more money from my father, and conceding their demands, my father also started giving them money. But they went on increasing their demands, which we were not able to meet,' she said.
Kavya claimed that after her separation from her husband, Justice Kumar even lodged a false complaint against her father. 'The police complaint says I was kidnapped by my father and that he had also stolen valuables from my in-laws' house.
Even after I explained to the Andhra police that I had come willingly with my father, they were putting pressure on us. On January 13, on a request from Andhra police, the Saidapet police summoned us for an inquiry.
A few days ago, my husband came to our house and behaved very violently with my neighbours,' said Kavya. Her husband has denied all the allegations.
