Chiru faces Samaikya heat in Rajahmundry
RAJAHMUNDRY: Union minister of state for tourism (independent charge) K Chiranjeevi Sunday faced the heat of Samaikyandhra agitation when protagonists of the unified state tried to prevent his convoy from entering the city.
Heated arguments ensued between the police and the agitators. The police changed the route of the Union minister's convoy and finally Chiranjeevi managed to unveil the statue of legendary film actor SV Ranga Rao on the Godavari bund in the city. Later, he called on former APIIC chairman S Sivarama Subramanyam at the latter's residence.
Earlier, the police prepared the route map for Chiranjeevi's convoy from Pushkara Ghat to Sitampeta via Three Town police station. But, later they changed the route to enable the convoy to reach the Godavari bund passing through Syamala Theatre Centre, Stadium Road and Kambala Tank.
Advocates, NGOs and student JAC members tried to stop the convoy at Kambala Tank but in vain. When the Union minister was returning from Subramanyam's house, the agitators, led by Seemandhra Advocates JAC co-convenor Muppalla Subba Rao prevented the convoy at Lalitha Nagar but the police foiled their attempt.
Meanwhile, women and Samaikyandhra agitators gathered at the Godavari bund and raised slogans demanding that Chiranjeevi resign from his ministry. The police had a tough time controlling the agitators.
