Mercury drips drastically in Visakhapatnam Agency VISAKHAPATNAM: Mercury dips to new lows in the agency area of Visakhapatnam with Lambasingi, which is popular as the poor man's Ooty, constantly recording below 4 to 5 degrees Celsius in the past one week.
Though Cyclone Warning Centre officials term these readings taken by revenue official as unscientific data, they admit that the temperatures are likely to drop further in the agency areas over the next couple of weeks, as it's a hill station.
According to the revenue officials, the temperature in the Lambasingi is around 4 to 5 degrees on an average in the last couple of days, and 8 to 9 in Araku. They expect further fall in the temperatures in the coming days.
The fall of temperature got good response from tourists, who are seen thronging the agency area to experience it.
Not surprisingly there has been an increase in the number of tourists to the agency area compared to that of last year, as per the APTDC officials.
'Actually we were in a dilemma that there would be no chill temperatures this season, as major green cover has been lost, but our expectation has turned completely wrong. The temperature has been like never before, it's chilling there,' said J Kishore, an entrepreneur from the city, who was on a trip to Lambasingi.
In the meantime, with the low temperatures prevailing, the living conditions of the local tribals have worsened. People stay indoors after 5 pm fearing cold weather. It is tougher for transport as the entire ghat road is covered with thick fog until after 10 am.
However, the Cyclone Warning Centre authorities claim that they have no weather stations in Lambasingi or Araku or in the agency to measure the temperatures.
However they have found temperatures below 10 degree Celsius through an agricultural office in the Chinthapalle region.
