PG girl student throws acid on lecturer
GUNTUR: PG student threw acid on her former lecturer near a government polytechnic college at Nallapadu on the outskirts of Guntur for allegedly cheating her by marrying some one else and still seeking to maintain a relationship with her.
G Soujanya, 26, who is currently pursuing PG in mathematics in Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, threw diluted sulphuric acid, which she was carrying in a jug, on P Venkataramana at the college gate.
Ramana, who is a lecturer in Government Polytechnic College for Minorities in Nallapadu, was on his way to the college after having lunch when he was attacked by Soujanya.
A case has been booked against Soujanya under section 326(A) of IPC. Nallapadu Inspector Ajay Kumar said Soujanya was clad in a burqa to conceal her identity.
Ramana, in his thirties, suffered burns on his face, hands, chest and throat. He was first taken to the Government General Hospital and later to Sankara Eye Hospital as his eyes reportedly suffered a major damage. The attacker too suffered mild burns on her face and hands when Ramana tried to fend her off.
Soujanya was a student of Ramana four years ago when he was teaching in a degree college in Narasaraopet where they developed intimacy and agreed to enter into wedlock.
But thereafter, she left to do her PG in AU and Ramana to Nallapadu. 'Ramana got married to another woman in August this year and has been avoiding Soujanya,' a police official said.
When Soujanya came to know about the marriage, she confronted him over phone and he expressed his desire to continue their relationship. 'He said he was willing to have me as his second wife,' Soujanya told newsmen. This 'indecent' proposal by Ramana spurred her to attack him with acid, Soujanya claimed.
It is learnt that parents of both sides were opposed to the marriage since both of them belong to different castes. 'Ramana admitted to having an affair with Soujanya and married another girl bowing to pressure from his parents,' Ajay Kumar said.
