No Nagarjuna Sagar water to Krishna delta HYDERABAD: The Telangana government on Wednesday decided not to supply water from the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) right bank canal to Andhra Pradesh and asserted that the latter may send a written request if it needed more water.
In the move that is expected to further escalate tensions between the two States, the Telangana government also put a rider: 'If Andhra Pradesh wants more water for Krishna Delta, it should give an undertaking that it would decrease its water quota in the next season and submit reconciliation of accounts.' The decisions were taken at a review meeting chaired by Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao here.
The Telangana government contends that Andhra Pradesh has already used 42 tmc of water over and above its allocated quota of 132 tmc. 'The water left in the NSP is just 50 tmc, which Telangana needs for its own requirements,' the irrigation department officials pointed out. The Telangana government has also stopped power generation at the NSP as the water levels decreased.
'At this juncture, release of further water to Andhra Pradesh is not possible. The water levels will not permit us,' a senior official said. Sources in the irrigation department told that Andhra Pradesh has used water through the right bank canal of NSP for the Handri-Neeva project and Krishna delta. 'If at all we have to release water to Andhra, we can release only 12 tmc through the left bank canal,' they said.
It is pertinent to note that the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has failed to convene a meeting and resolve the row between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The KRMB has expressed its inability to allocate water to the two States. Hence, the Telangana government, which operates the Nagarjuna Sagar Project, has decided to stop the release of more water to Andhra Pradesh.
