Centre notifies Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh capital Delhi: The Centre has declared Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Amaravati has been given legal status. The Union Law Department has issued a gazette notification to this effect after the ascent of President Draupadi Murmu.
The gazette states that Amaravati has been notified as the capital of AP from June 2, 2024. As per the resolution passed by the AP Assembly on March 28, the central government has amended Section 5(2) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and recognised Amaravati as the capital of AP.
In the discussions held in both houses of Parliament on 1st and 2nd of April, 35 members discussed it for about 260 minutes and approved it by voice vote. The central government has sent the bill passed by both houses of Parliament for the President's assent. As per the powers conferred under Article 111 of the Constitution, the President gave her ascent to the bill.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu for her gracious assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, fulfilling the long-cherished dream of the state capital.
