Chandrababu Naidu to inaugurate Tungabhadra project new gates on June 25 Amaravati: The Tungabhadra project new gates will be inaugurated by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on June 25 along with Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Union Minister C.R. Patil.
Tungabhadra project, lifeline for both the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, has acquired a renewed and strengthened infrastructure with the installation of new spillway gates. Works for the installation of all 33 new gates, undertaken at a cost of Rs 51 crore, have been completed.
Constructed 73 years ago, the Tungabhadra project has been providing irrigation facility to lakhs of acres of agricultural land across the region. However, during the heavy floods of August 2024, the 19th gate of the dam was washed away, raising serious concerns about the dam's safety and water management.
To prevent further water loss, the Andhra Pradesh Government acted swiftly. Following the directions of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, a team led by senior engineer Kannayya Naidu installed a stop-lock gate as an emergency measure.Subsequently, the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) recommended the replacement of all spillway gates. Acting on these recommendations, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka governments completed the installation of the new gates within just six months, restoring and strengthening this critical irrigation infrastructure.
The Tungabhadra Project provides irrigation to lakhs of acres and drinking water to hundreds of villages across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. In Andhra Pradesh alone, the project supplies irrigation water to 1.46 lakh hectares of agricultural land. Through its Right main canal, the project provides irrigation to the districts of Kurnool, Kadapa and Anantapur.
Recognising the project's importance, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka governments treated the restoration work as a priority and completed the gate replacement in a time-bound manner.
Following the inauguration ceremony on June 25, the dignitaries will also participate in a public meeting at Hospet. The completion of the new gates marks a significant milestone in ensuring the long-term safety, sustainability and water security for millions of people.
