Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital celebrates 28th Formation Day VISAKHAPATNAM: Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital celebrated its 28th Formation Day on Monday with doctors, staff, and trustees paying tributes to its founder, Late Atmakuri Sankar Rao.
The day began with the garlanding of Sankar Rao's statue on the hospital premises, followed by floral tributes from employees across departments. The hospital was established on June 2, 1997 by renowned Visakhapatnam philanthropist Atmakuri Sankar Rao and his wife Yesodha, Founder Trustee, with the aim of providing quality eye care to the poor and underprivileged. It was inaugurated by Sadguru Sivanandamurthi.

What started in a two-bedroom rented space with just 10 employees has grown into one of the region's key eye care institutions. Today, the hospital functions with a team of 450 doctors and staff. Guided by the founder's vision of 'giving sight to the sightless', the hospital has focused on accessible and affordable treatment for those who cannot afford it.
Addressing the heads of departments, Atmakuri Krishna Kumar, elder son of the founder, recalled the values that shaped the institution and called for stronger systems and dedicated work to take the hospital to new heights.
He acknowledged the role of major corporates whose support, he said, had helped upgrade medical infrastructure and push the mission to eliminate avoidable blindness in the region. Krishna Kumar congratulated employees for their tireless efforts in safeguarding patient wellbeing and enhancing the hospital's reputation.
Since its inception, Sankar Foundation has performed over 5,16,000 eye surgeries and screened nearly 30 lakh outpatients. The hospital said these efforts have transformed countless lives through timely intervention and quality eye care.
