Naidu announces Plan to Build 5,000 Temples Amaravati, July 16: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday participated in the first Jagannath Rath Yatra organised in Amaravati and announced that the state government plans to construct 5,000 Sri Venkateswara Swamy temples across Andhra Pradesh.
The Rath Yatra was organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or ISKCON, at Venkatapalem in the Amaravati capital region. Describing the event as historic and auspicious, Naidu welcomed ISKCON's proposal to conduct the procession in Amaravati every year.
Dressed in traditional attire, the Chief Minister offered special prayers to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra before joining ISKCON spiritual leaders in pulling the ceremonial chariot and formally beginning the procession.
Government Plans 5,000 Venkateswara Temples
Addressing devotees at the event, Naidu said the government had decided to construct 5,000 temples dedicated to Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy across the state under the patronage of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
He said temples should serve not only as places of worship but also as centres of peace, community interaction and social well-being. The proposed temples, according to the Chief Minister, would give people more opportunities to gather and participate in spiritual and cultural activities.
Naidu said the state government would work closely with religious and cultural organisations such as ISKCON to preserve Indian traditions and promote spiritual values among younger generations.
Further details regarding the locations, construction schedule, estimated cost and funding arrangements for the 5,000 temples are expected to be announced by the government and TTD.
Spirituality Can Help Address Social Stress, Says Naidu
The Chief Minister used the occasion to speak about growing stress, weakening family relationships and the negative effects of excessive social-media use.
He said economic development and material prosperity alone could not guarantee happiness or social stability. According to Naidu, the increasing preference for nuclear families and declining interpersonal relationships were contributing to family conflicts, emotional distress, suicides and crimes involving children.
He emphasised the importance of spirituality, family values and stronger relationships in creating a peaceful and healthy society. Naidu also spoke in favour of preserving the traditional joint-family system, saying it could provide emotional support and strengthen bonds between generations.
Amaravati Rath Yatra to Become an Annual Event
Naidu compared the Amaravati celebration with the renowned Jagannath Rath Yatra held annually in Puri, Odisha, one of India's most important religious festivals.
During the traditional festival, the deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are taken out in a ceremonial procession on decorated chariots. Thousands of devotees participate in pulling the chariots as an expression of faith and devotion.
Naidu said many devotees were unable to travel to Puri and welcomed the organisation of a similar spiritual event in the Andhra Pradesh capital region.
ISKCON's decision to hold the festival annually could help establish the Amaravati Rath Yatra as a significant religious and cultural attraction. It may also draw devotees and tourists from different parts of Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Religious and Cultural Development in Amaravati
The event forms part of a broader effort by the government to develop Amaravati as more than an administrative capital.
The Naidu government has repeatedly spoken about building the city as a modern capital with cultural, spiritual, educational and tourism infrastructure. Religious institutions and major temples are expected to form part of the capital region's long-term development.
Naidu also reiterated the government's commitment to completing the Amaravati capital and the Polavaram irrigation project. He described both projects as crucial to Andhra Pradesh's development and the welfare of its people.
The government has resumed major construction and infrastructure activity in Amaravati after the TDP-led alliance returned to power in 2024.
Devotees Participate in Processions Across the Region
Large numbers of devotees participated in Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrations in Amaravati and Vijayawada.
In Vijayawada, the procession began at the Sitara Grounds and travelled through Swathi Theatre Road, Kanaka Durga Temple Road and Ratham Centre before reaching a specially established Gundicha Mandir near Seethamma Vari Paadalu. Devotees pulled the decorated chariot while participating in prayers, devotional singing and religious celebrations.
The launch of the Amaravati Rath Yatra and the announcement of 5,000 temples underline the government's increasing focus on spiritual infrastructure and cultural development.
The success of the proposed temple programme will depend on transparent site selection, adequate funding, proper maintenance and the ability of the temples to function as inclusive community institutions in different parts of the state.
