Skyroot Vikram-1 Launch Opens India's Private Space Era Sriharikota, July 18, 2026: Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace on Saturday successfully launched Vikram-1, India's first privately developed orbital-class launch vehicle, under Mission Aagaman, marking a historic milestone for the country's rapidly expanding private space industry. The successful mission places India among a select group of nations where private companies have independently developed and launched orbital-class rockets.

The maiden flight successfully validated several critical technologies, including propulsion systems, stage separation, guidance, navigation and control mechanisms, while carrying multiple technology demonstration payloads for Indian and international customers. Designed to place small satellites into Low Earth Orbit, Vikram-1 is expected to strengthen India's presence in the fast-growing global commercial launch market.
The achievement is widely regarded as a major outcome of India's space sector reforms, which encouraged greater private participation through initiatives led by ISRO and IN-SPACe. These reforms have enabled Indian startups to design, build, test and launch indigenous space vehicles, accelerating innovation and expanding the country's space-tech ecosystem.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot Aerospace team, describing the launch as a historic milestone that reflects the talent, innovation and determination of India's scientists, engineers and young entrepreneurs. The mission also carried a handwritten message from the Prime Minister, symbolising India's aspirations as it enters a new era of space exploration.
Founded by former ISRO scientists, Skyroot Aerospace has rapidly emerged as one of India's leading space-technology startups. The success of Vikram-1 not only establishes the company's technological capabilities but also reinforces India's ambition to become a global hub for affordable and reliable satellite launch services.

The successful mission is expected to boost investor confidence, attract greater private investment into the space sector and accelerate the development of next-generation launch vehicles. As demand for small satellite launches continues to grow worldwide, Vikram-1's success marks the beginning of a new era for India's commercial space industry and further strengthens the country's position in the global space economy.
