Thief swallows poison to escape being caught VIJAYAWADA: One person 'committed' suicide in Vijaywada 'while the police were apprehending him' while another 'tried to kill himself by slashing his throat' in Machilipatnam, afraid of 'interrogation' by the guardians of law.
In the Vijayawada incident, the police said that the victim, Pulla Ramesh alias Venkata Ramesh, a chain snatcher, swallowed poison when a police team 'tried' to apprehend him at Ramavarappadu circle.
On information that 'chain snatchers' were moving near Ramavarappadu, Penamaluru inspector of police along with his men rushed there and found Ramesh along with another person moving on a bike.
The police immediately tried to apprehend them but Ramesh took out poison from his pocket and swallowed it and shouted that none could do any harm to him. Ramesh's condition became critical and the police rushed him to the government hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
According to police commissioner AB Venkateswara Rao, Ramesh was a habitual thief since childhood. When as a boy he stole gold from his own house, his father lodged a complaint with the police who arrested him and sent him to a juvenile home. The case against him was withdrawn in 2006 after his father withdrew the complaint.
Rao said that there were two cases against Ramesh in Gannavaram and Patamta police stations in connection with stealing of bikes. The police officer said that he has information that Ramesh was the kingpin in a series of chain snatching cases being reported in Vijayawada of late. An inquest was done in the presence of an executive magistrate and post-mortem examination in the presence of a team of doctors.
In Machilipatnam, an old convict B Govindu hailing from Rajahmundry was caught by police on Tuesday night while he was trying to commit a theft in Englishpalem.
Govindu, who was afraid of police 'interrogation', went to bathroom on the pretext of easing himself and then cut his throat with a mosquito coil stand, Machilipatnam deputy superintendent of police D Sravan Kumar said.
He said that since the injury on his throat was minor, he was discharged from the hospital. He was then handed over to his brother who lives in Vijayawada, Sravan Kumar said.
