EPIC-Aadhar linking will be completed by Aug 15: CEC Hyderabad, Feb 14 (INN): Chief Election Commissioner HS Brahma on Saturday announced that the linking of Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) with Aadhar will be done from 1st March to 15th August.
He was speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a workshop of District Collectors of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State on linking of Aadhar Card with electoral roll data base, seeding and authentication of Aadhar through SRDH application, held at Dr Marri Chenna Reddy Institute here on Saturday.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that the EPIC-Aadhar linking work would be done in all 676 districts across the country. He said of nearly 84 crore voters, about 74 crore have Aadhar cards.
He said the difference of 10 crore is due to duplication, change of addresses, or other factors. However, he said measures would be taken to clear the difference. He said the linking would bring total transparency and ensure free and fair elections as defined in the Section 324 of the Constitution.
He said the Bio-Metrics feature in Aadhar would eradicate the irregularities like impersonation or duplication in the conduct of elections in future.
Brahma also informed that the ECI has launched its national service portal on January 25 this year. The portal provides complete information to the voters and they could also apply for corrections online. He sought the cooperation of all political parties in implementation of electoral reforms as they would strengthen the democracy.
The CEC also claimed that Electronic Voting Machines were working fine and dismissed all reports of possibilities of manipulation of EVMs. He said there are nearly 1.50 lakh EVMs in the country which were manufactured at a cost of Rs 30,000 each. When asked about the introduction of online voting system, he said such a move would require legislation by the Parliament of India.
