Congress demands referendum on land-pooling GUNTUR: Former minister and APCC chief N Raghuveera Reddy has demanded a referendum on land-pooling in Tullur region as many farmers are opposing land acquisition for capital construction.
Extending solidarity with the farmers of Penumaka and Undavalli, who are not willing to give up their lands for the capital, Raghuveera Reddy, along with other Congress party leaders including JD Seelam, K Bapi Raju and C Ramachandraiah, participated in the one-day 'Rythu Deeksha' taken up by farmers in Undavalli on Sunday.
Addressing the gathering, he said his party would conduct a secret ballot to elicit the opinions of farmers to bring pressure on the government. 'When there are several acres of lands available elsewhere in the district, why the State Government is keen on acquiring the fertile farmlands here and convert the region into a concrete jungle?' he demanded to know.
Stating that his party will always stand by the farmers and champion for their cause, Raghuveera Reddy said the only intention of Chandrababu Naidu's government seems to acquire the land for real estate purpose.
'Lands from farmers are being acquired for free and in all likelihood will be given to foreign corporates for crores of rupees,' he said, while describing CRDA as Chandrababu Naidu's real estate development agency.
Raghuveera and other Congress leaders claimed that BJP government is also being anti-farmer and to help the TDP government's plans to usurp farmers' fertile lands, it has brought in an ordinance amending the Land Acquisition Act.
CPM state secretary P Madhu, YSRC MLA from Mangalagiri A Ramakrishna Reddy and other leaders of the party also spoke.
