Heavy rains disrupt life in Nellore

Nellore: With continuous rains lashing Nellore district for the past four days, all rivers, lakes and ponds in the district are overflowing, disrupting normal life at many places, including Nellore town.

Schools in Nellore town declared holiday on Saturday. Rain water entered the under bridges at Magunta layout, Vijayamahal Gate, Muthukur Gate and Athmakur bus stand. People living in slum areas such as Kondayapalem, Kukulagunta, Khudus Nagar, Mansoor Nagar and NTR Nagar were rendered homeless with the gushing waters sweeping away their homes.

Vehicular traffic between Vinjamur, Kavali and Udayagiri was disrupted with the Kaveri canal overflowing at Yerukalu. Nellore town recorded 140 mm rainfall on a single day, inundating all low lying areas. Vinjamur recorded 73.4 mm rainfall and Venkatagiri 72.6 mm.

The movement of vehicles between I-town and II-town was paralyzed due to water logging at the underbridge that connects the towns. The Municipal Corporation of Nellore stepped up relief efforts.

The Nellore District Collector, Mr B Sridhar, took stock of the situation. He visited some of the low lying areas. He assured the people that the district administration was ready to tackle the situation. He instructed officials to speed up rescue and rehabilitation operations.

The district normally records average rainfall of 239 mm by the end of October. So far, 223.6 mm rainfall has been recorded. In 2010, the district registered the highest ever rainfall of 33.8 mm, 78.6 mm and 96.8 mm on October 29,30 and 31 respectively.

This year 36.1 mm rainfall was recorded on October 29. The district administration reviewed relief operations taken up in the past three years to evolve a strategy for streamlining current operations.

Following rains, the officials have excluded some of the mandals from those previously identified as drought-hit. The Collector had submitted proposals to the state government that 33 mandals in the district should be declared drought-hit.

Now, that number has been brought down to 10 mandals. Mr Sridhar took a decision to this effect, after examining data for three years furnished by the planning officials. The chief planning officer, Mr Shivanayakar, told the The Hans India that the list might be revised again if the rains continued for another two days.

Mr Shivanayakar stated that several mandals had recorded less rainfall, including Athmakur, AS Peta, Kaluvai, Ananta Sagar, Chejerla, Rapur, Marripadu, Varikuntapadu, Kaligiri, Kondapur, Dakkili, Balayapalli, Doravarisatram, Venkatagiri, Saidapuram, Kovur, Jaladanki, Kodavalur, Bogolu, Bucchireddipalem and Vidayalur. He pointed out a fresh list of mandals that could be identified as drought-hit would be forwarded to the government.

The mandals to be included in the fresh list are Chejerla, Rapur, Marripadu, Varikuntapadu, Dakkili, Balayapalli, Saidapuram, Gudur, Tada and DV Satram.
