Youth dies in judicial custody: Relatives allege torture Hyderabad, Dec 13 (INN): Tension prevailed in the Dhoolpet area on Tuesday when the local residents and BJP leaders staged a dharna in front of Prohibition and Excise Station in protest against the death of a 20-year-old youth Vishaal Singh in judicial custody.
Vishaal, a resident of Balramgalli in Dhoolpet, was arrested by the Prohibition and Excise Department on Dec 8 near Rahimpura Grounds on the charges of trading in illicit liquor.
He was sent to judicial remand on Dec 9 and was lodged in Cherlapally Central Prison. However, he fell ill in the prison and was admitted to the Gandhi Hospital on Monday. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital late Monday.
On the receipt of news of Vishaal's death, his relatives and local residents gathered and staged a dharna before the Prohibition and Excise Station at Dhoolpet on Tuesday. They alleged that Vishaal was tortured using third degree methods by the excise constables on Dec 8 which consequently led to his death.
Dhoolpet corporator Raja Singh, former MLA Baddam Bal Reddy and other BJP leaders also participated in the dharna and demanded action against the excise constables who were allegedly responsible for Vishaal's death. They also demanded payment of ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh and a government job for Vishaal's family.
Prohibition and Excise Department DSP Sujit Singh assured the protestors that an enquiry would be conducted after the receipt of post-mortem report. Meanwhile, the City Police have deployed additional forces in the area as a precautionary measure.
