Crime against women on the rise

Hyderabad, Dec 29 (INN): Police Department boasts of decline in the number of murder cases in the city, but the alarming thing is the crime took place in broad daylight baffling the citizens.

Dowry deaths were on the rise along with rape during the year which also has seen drug peddling in a good measure even as the cyber crime rate went up.

Though the number of murders has come down from 132 in 2010 to 119 in 2011, the fear has increased, to say the least as majority of the murders this year took place in broad day light.

Crime against women was on the rise with the number of rape case and dowry deaths increasing as compared to previous year. However, police had a busy and hectic year with bondobust duties increasing in wake of the Sakala Janula Samme and other agitations.

According to the figures released by City Police Commissioner AK Khan here on Thursday., total crimes reported during the year was 14, 718 as compared to the previous year figure of 16,703.

Police data says that all the crimes have come down marginally and the recoveries percentage has increased from 38.57 to 42.84 this year.

Patting his own back, Mr Khan said crimes under important heads from murders to theft, kidnappings and cheatings have shown decline with the effective policing by the department.

There was also a decline in the crime against women, he said adding that three more women police stations would be created in the Central, East and West zones to minimize domestic violence.

Dowry death increased from 28 in the previous year to 30 this year while number of rape cases was up from 43 to 56, according to the data.

Women harassment cases fell from 1455 to 1314 and abetment to suicide dropped from 41 to 34 whle the total number of cases fell from 1779 to 1623. Eleven cases were booked for drugs and 41 persons, including 20 foreign nationals were arrested.

Cyber crime went up from 53 to 68 this year and chain snatchings went up from 851 to 884. Police Department is moving from UHF communication mode to Tretra Communication network, Mr Khan said.

Traffic police continue to hog the limelight with their challans as the amount of fine collected was a whopping Rs 22.25 crore against the previous year figure of Rs 17.81 crore. The e-challans figure too increased twofold from RS 6.82 crore to 11.52 crore.

Surprisingly the number of accidents decreaed from 2,797 to 2.621 and the number of persons killed was 430 as it was 494 last year.

The drunken driving cases booked from November were 1356 in which 656 cases involved people in the age group of 20-29 followed by 442 cases booked invoving people in the age group of 30 to 39. Senior citizens were involved in seven cases.

The task force has done a good job in investigation and other policing work, Mr Khan said.
