GHMC night sanitation workers found skipping duties Hyderabad, March 18 (INN): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is all set to take severe action against over 30 per cent workers of night sanitation units who were found abstained from work during a surprise inspection held in the wee hours of Sunday.
Disclosing the details of surprise inspection held from 12 midnight to 4 am on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) L Vandana Kumar said that Assistant Medical Officers of GHMC's Health Department along with the Assistant Engineers conducted surprise inspection of the night sanitation units in seven circles.
During inspection the GHMC officials found that of 1,232 workers who were to be present, only 849 were found performing their duties. The rest 383 workers or about 31.08 per cent were absent.
Similarly, of 15, two jawans were absent and of five Sanitary Supervisors, only two were on duty. As many six out of 53 Private Sanitary Supervisors were also absent.
Vandana Kumar said that the GHMC would take severe action against the absentees within three days. He said the surprise visits were held in views of reports of missing garbage bins, absenteeism of workers and improper payment to workers by the contractors.
Further, Vandana Kumar said that all seven garbage dumpers were dysfunctional and needed immediate repairs. The GHMC is also trying to identify a new location for dumping the garbage.
Earlier, a place between Kukatpally and Yousufguda was identified for the establishment of a garbage yard. However, due to litigation, the proposal was shelved.
He also said that the many vehicles used by the sanitation units needed repairs and they would be sent to the service centres soon.
The Additional Commissioner said that Hyderabad has emerged as a role model for carrying out cleaning activities during night time and efforts were being made to streamline the entire system to make it more effective.
Meanwhile, GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain told INN that he would soon visit colonies and hold Community Group Breakfasts to ensure that cleanliness and sanitation works were taken up in a proper manner.
Further, he said that the GHMC was considering constitution of a Corporators' Committee to review the purchase and performance of street lighting system in the GHMC limits.
