GHMC bans lit hoardings to save power Hyderabad, August 25 (INN): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Saturday imposed a ban on "lit hoardings" asking the advertising agencies not to illuminate the hoardings until further instructions.
According to GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu the measure has been initiated to minimize the power consumption in view of the present power crisis prevailing in the State.
He said that the violation of above instruction would be viewed seriously and action would be initiated against the violators.
There are around 3,300 hoardings in GHMC and of them, nearly 40 percent are lit boards and Kiosks. There would be a good result if GHMC could control the illumination.
The GHMC Commissioner also informed that except four to five stretches, all the lollipops have been removed following the directions of the court.
He instructed the maintenance staff of GHMC electrical wing to switch on the streetlights after 7 PM and switch off the same before 5 AM, as it was not getting dark before 7 PM due to seasonal conditions. This could save power consumption for 2-3 hours a day.
The GHMC is presently utilizing 20 million units of electricity per month for maintenance of streetlights, water supply to peripheral areas and for other purposes.
In view of power crisis, the GHMC is planning to conserve 20 ' 25 percent of electricity use which would be about 5 million units per month, if all the measures are fruitful, he added.
The Commissioner has directed the officers concerned to conserve the power in their offices and felt that it would be more useful if that power could be utilized in sectors like domestic and Agriculture.
He also informed that GHMC is planning to replace all the electrical equipment with LED and CFL lamps and it has been decided to use LED lighting for streetlights in all the important roads but it has been getting delayed because of court cases.
