OU law students held for preying on lovers
HYDERABAD: Having married for love against the wishes of their families, two law students chose the path of crime to lead a lavish life. Ironically, they chose to target the lovers who frequent the Osmania University campus to rob them.
By day, they attended classes just like other students. At night, they sneaked out of their hostel rooms in search of their quarry of couples canoodling in the lovers' lanes of the campus.
They took pictures of necking couples, rudely interrupted them, threatened to take them to the police and relieved them of any valuables they might be carrying. They carried out 20 such robberies, aided in this by an associate.
But on Friday, their anti-amorous adventures were brought to an end by the Osmania University police. They are now cooling their heels in the clink.
According to the police, Teegala Bharathnath and Pasupuleti Nagvendra Kumar, both 24-year-old students of LL.B.final year, recently married their respective girl friends against the wishes of the families of the girls.
Their associate in crime, Palleti Prabhanjan, 25, of Suryapet, alleged had a criminal background in Nalgonda. Deputy commissioner of police (east) Y Gangadhar said the trio dreamt of leading a luxurious lifestyle and planned to prowl the love lanes as an easy way to make money.
As inmates of the hostel, they were familiar with the spots frequented by lovers on campus, such as the Landscape Gardens, a lush lung space on campus with ample zones of privacy.
They would spy on couples from far, zero in on them at an unsuspecting time, photograph the proceedings and then move in for the kill. Threatened with a marching to the police station, most couples would meekly surrender their valuables.
Detective K Madhu Mohan Reddy said Prabhanjan had discontinued his studies after failing his degree exam. In 2003, he was allegedly involved in two theft cases in Devarakonda and in 2008, he graduated to motorcycle theft and chain snatchings.
Bharathnath was allegedly Prabhanjan's accomplice in a chain snatching. Nagvendra Kumar, being Bharathnath's roommate, was admitted into the ring of petty crime.
